This dance is usually danced by younger women, teens and young adults, since it is fast and requires elaborate footwork. The women carry shawls and manipulate them in coordination with light and floating movements, as in imitation of a butterfly. Some young women begin their dancing life with the general Intertribal or even the Men’s Traditional Dance then move on to the Shawl dance, in keeping with their superior physical abilities. It is said that the Shawl dance came into prominence after WW II.
