Jingle Dance |
||||
The Jingle Dress and Dance originated with Maggie Smith of the Anishinaabe people of Manitoulin Island, Ontario. It is said that her grandfather received, in a dream, the healing dress which would cure his granddaughter of a long-time illness. The dress displays 365 jingle cones, representing 365 days of the year, which create the healing sound with each step of the dancer. Today, one can see many Jingle Dress Dancers participating as dancers in the “powwow” arena.
